Statement Of Intent Feedback & LR

RANA, Arkin

Mark: 4

Grade: D

Comments for AQA:

  • This is a largely clear statement of intent that shows a good concept that matches the TV crime drama brief. It fits the target audience appropriately and feels like a ‘Netflix style’ show.
  • Media language elements are the strongest element here – good consideration of mise-en-scene and sound with connotations addressed. Camera shots weaker as lacking specific plans. Narrative disequilibrium is covered and clear idea of where extract appears in the overall series.
  • Representation is weaker, lacking the depth required for the higher levels in the mark scheme. Point on diversity is valid but lacking terminology or theory.
  • Audience is addressed briefly with some use of theory (Blumler & Katz) although again lacking the depth for the higher levels. Lacking more detailed discussion of target audience too.
  • Digital convergence and print brief are not addressed.

Feedback:

  • This starts very strongly but then tails off – plenty of potential to get the whole thing to a high level with another draft. Your concept meets the brief and it definitely feels like a Netflix show – now you need to get this statement up to a top level
  • Layout: I’d strongly recommend using bullet points for the media language section – this will save you words rather than having to say ‘coming round to sound’ etc.
  • For camerawork you need to write about a few specific shots rather than general comments on how you will use types of shots.
  • The print element of the brief is missing but you may want to rectify this in the final draft when we focus on those pre-production elements after Christmas.
  • Representation is weak – no theory and not much more than a brief discussion of diversity. Can you link this to social/cultural contexts? Can you link it to the target audience in the brief? Can you bring in some media theories?
  • Audience does mention theory briefly but again could be much stronger. Can you discuss the target audience in more detail – expand on it? Are there other audience theorists that are relevant here? You can also address the digital convergence element of the mark scheme here by discussing how your audience will consume the video and print production.

Next steps:

  • Copy and paste this feedback to your Media 2 coursework blog with the title ‘Statement of Intent feedback and learner response’.
  • As your learner response, pick out the three improvements/changes you need to make to your Statement of Intent before producing a final draft.
  • Re-draft your statement of intent using Microsoft Word / Google Docs – you may wish to do this after Christmas when we have completed research and planning for the print element of the brief.
LR:
-Include more Representations and representation theory about characters and why it would appeal to audiences.

-Be more specific, give actual situations when reasoning for the camera shots such as an extreme close up to convey fear or emphasise expression.

-Bullet Point reasons to conserve space and include print/magazine section
