Film & TV Language: Sound analysis tasks

 1) Find a film clip on YouTube that uses sound in an interesting way. Analyse the use of sound, making sure you use the key language we have learned about sound in film:

  • Diegetic and non-diegetic sound
  • Parallel and contrapuntal sound
  • Sound bridges
Remember to discuss/analyse all the different types of sound present in the clip:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Voiceover
  • Sound effects
You also need to highlight or put in bold any use of media language.

Diegetic sounds:

The dialogue in the scene is used to talk between the characters, in this case, it is to insult or intimidate them, another main use of the dialogue is the sounds that they make whether it is to convey pain or effort in a punch or swing. These are sounds that can be heard by both characters and the audience which makes the sound diegetic.

The sound effects of being hit with metal bars, punches, guns being loaded, etc. are all heard in this clip to convey an action or someone being hurt in this clip, the impact of these sounds emphasises the power of the hits that are being traded between the characters and to connote the protagonist's power in this scene, as the scene progresses we can see that the protagonist gets stronger and the sound of his hits increase in power and the weapons that he uses also have a kick to them.

Non-Diegetic sounds:

The Non-diegetic sounds in this scene would be the music that suddenly appears mid-way through the scene as the music just starts midway which suggests this is non-diegetic, the music is quite parallel to the scene as it connotes the anger/power that the protagonist gains as he starts to kill multiple men by himself. The song uses a lot of metal instruments and a guitar which usually connotes energy, power and anger.
