Film & TV Language: Cinematography blog tasks

 1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.

In the opening scene of "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" we can see the scene starts with a close up on one of the character's face connoting his focus on a certain object or thing, we later see in the next establishing shot of the town that two objects slowly start to rise and become more visible revealing what the character was observing, the close up allows us to see in greater depth the characters focus due to his nostrils heavily moving, the sweat and his wide eyes. We then get more close ups of more of the characters to introduce them in a way, the back and forth of the close ups may connote that the characters are planning something amongst themselves. The long shots/over the shoulder shots show more of the characters as they eventually meet together in which the back and forth, long shots comeback to establish the environment around them to emphasise the emptiness of the dessert.
The medium shot at the saloon uses the brief pause to build up a bit of tension to anticipate shootout that is going to happen in the saloon. Then the final shot is a medium long shot to denote the distance between the man and his freedom.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

Find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blogpost.

3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.

In this still shot of The Godfather we can can see that it is a medium close up shot of Godfather as seen by rose on his suit and sitting down while the other actor whispers something to him The Godfather sitting down connotes his power as he has everything come to him. From the image we can see that this would be some sort of mafia related movie due to the generic boss with his "slick-pullback" hair and his hand gesture. This medium close up connotes secrecy as the screen is backed away from the subjects but just close enough to see that something is going on behind everyone's back.
