Film & TV Language: Lighting

 1) Still image analysis

Look at the still images on slides 33-37 of the Film Language Powerpoint linked above. Copy the photos into your blog and answer the following questions for each image:
    1. Identify examples of high and low-key lighting.
    2. Say which depicts the top, back or underlighting.
    3. What effects are created by the lighting in each image?

This image uses low-key lighting as in the image lighting,
in the image top lighting is used, this will create an effect of mystery as it makes the smoke more prominent which covers the actor's face reinforcing that mystery effect.

This image uses high-key lighting is used and the lighting being used would be top lighting, the effect of the lighting in this image would be that the amount of darkness contrasted to the little amount of light would indicate some kind of hope for the woman.
This image uses high-key lighting and uses top lighting to emphasise his superiority as the jewellery that he wears reflects the light coming down on top of him.
This image uses high-key lighting and also uses top lighting, the dark lighting conveys some sort of dark sadness or some sort of uncanny feeling.
This image uses low-key lighting and uses backlighting  to create a prominent shadow which shows that connotes some sort of danger
In this image, high-key lighting
is used and some sort of natural lighting is being used as the light is seeping through the blinds.
In this image, low-key lighting is used and backlighting is to convey some sort of heroic tone of the characters as only their shadows and silhouettes can be seen.
In this image low-key lighting is used and so is backlighting to make the shadow more prominent and yet again to convey some sort of danger.
This image uses high-key lighting and uses top light to emphasise the subjects' relief/make them look more glamorous
This image uses high-key lighting and uses natural lighting to make a more claustrophobic setting of light and to create fear.
In this image low-key lighting is used and uses backlighting to bring out the shadow to emphasise the romance between the two subjects.

2) Film noir research

Research film noir - focusing on the genre’s distinctive lighting style. Make notes on the genre, particularly the use of lighting - bullet points are fine.

Noir is a genre mainly featuring low-key lighting, The word "noir" meaning black in french links to how the genre's lighting is usually dark to connote mystery and secrecy among the characters/setting/situation. It almost creates an "uncanny" atmosphere in the audience

3) Film noir YouTube clip analysis

Finally, find a YouTube clip that fits the film noir genre and embed it under your research (the clip can be classic noir from the 1950s or something more recent - neo-noir). How does the clip's lighting fit the film noir genre?

In this opening scene for Sin City, the lighting uses high-key lighting and uses natural lighting to make things more mysterious as the subject/event is more hidden from the viewer to reinforce the sense of secrecy in the opening scene the man appears to have assassinated the woman in the scene, also another aspect in this scene is how the colours of the woman are highlighted by the red parts of her costume. The lighting is overall pretty dark as it is at the night and uses natural lights such as the lamp posts or the light from inside.
