Film & TV Language: Mise-en-scene blog tasks

 1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

The actor's costume is wearing a suit with little to no imperfections appearing, this connotes a superior status or maybe highlights his professional abilities. His facial expressions connote insanity due to the blank "thousand-yard stare". The room he is in could also connote that he is alone as the colour represents something similar to a solitary confinement room in a prison and the little scratches in the room may connote that despite being all orderly there are some flaws that this character may have.
The lighting in the room uses high-key lighting as it really emphasise the grey depressing background which is parallel to how the actor looks/feels in this current scene.

2) Find TWO films or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blog post and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

Scene one: Breaking Bad Opening scene

In this scene, we can see that two of the actors are wearing gas masks implying that some sort of chemicals were being used within the RV. The leading actor is driving and the others are presumed dead as they have their body thrown around while the leading actor frantically driving connoting panic/urgency as if he were escaping the police. We can see this reinforced further as after he crashes the RV he throws the gas mask in rage. He quickly gets dressed in the little clothing he has left and grabs a camera to record what could be seen as a confession video of the crime he may have committed conveyed by the bodies in the RV.
The scene ends with him aiming his gun at the road as he prepared for the consequences.
The high key lighting connotes the outside environment connotes nature and the naturality of and how the actor reacts to have committed a crime.

Scene two: Scary movie 3; Fighting Michael Jackson

In this clip we can denote the lead actor is carrying a comically large/unnecessary lantern, despite there being a considerable amount of light and the lantern barely lighting anything. Later in the scene, we can see a figure in a white cloth rocking back and forth which is commonly used in horror films to connote the person going insane.
Later in the scene where the lead actor fights with Micheal the music changes from a suspenseful fight to a more upbeat song in which Micheal starts "dance fighting" him.
Near the end of the clip, we see that when Micheal gets thrown out the window his nose comes off which is making fun of the make-up Micheal had, Micheal also has a lot of make up almost making him a pale white which also makes fun of how Micheal looks.
